Choosing the Best Pet Food

Blog

Pets are a human's best friend and lifelong companion. As such pet owners always strive to ensure they are feeding their beloved pet only the best pet food. Choosing the wrong type of pet food may have adverse consequences on the pet's health and cause them to become ill. That is why it is necessary to carry out research into the type of pet food best suited to one's pet.

Here are things to consider when choosing pet food:

Ingredients

Even if the pet food may claim to be ''well-balanced'', this may not always be the case. Highly processed pet food can contain many types of preservatives, food dyes and rendered fat. All these ingredients can cause pet health to deteriorate over time and can also cause conditions such as fungal infections. Healthy pet food will include mostly natural ingredients which are well balanced. This means that the food contains the appropriate amount of fats, carbohydrates, protein, vitamins and minerals. Good pet food will also have appropriate labels detailing the right portion size based on the animal's weight.

Dry pet food

This is becoming increasingly popular because it is convenient and has a longer shelf life. Just because this is dry food doesn't mean that it isn't nutritionally sound. Dry pet food is formulated using the best ingredients for pets. Owners should, however, ensure that their pet is drinking lots of water when eating mostly dry food, as lack of hydration can be a problem.

Tinned food

This also another convenient option. Tinned food is available in a wide variety of flavours allowing pets to enjoy many types of flavours. One should, however, ensure that the ingredients are well balanced and don't contain any harmful compounds. All pet food must also comply with national Australian Standards and one should check on the label for this information.

Variety

It is important to note that no one type of pet food (e.g. tinned, dry etc) should be the only source of nutrition for a pet. Just like humans, pets also need variety in their diet. This means that pets should be fed all types of food to ensure that they stay in optimum health.

Choosing the best type of pet food is an important step in ensuring that one's pet stays healthy. Alongside pet food, it is also important to schedule regular checkups to ensure that the pet is thriving and that the pet is not deficient in any vitamins or minerals.
