How Veterinary Surgeory Could Help Fix The Joint Issues In Your Cat Or Dog

Blog

Cats and dogs are two of the most popular pet types across Australia and the world. The two are beloved by many, but also often suffer from quite similar health conditions due to their comparable size and body structure. Joint issues are common in both cats and dogs, and while they are sometimes caused by age, they can also come at much younger ages with no forewarning at all. If your cat or dog is clearly suffering from joint pain, and your vet has confirmed this, then you may want to consider allowing them to undergo veterinary surgery to help them overcome this.

Arthritis

Numerous forms of arthritis appear in both cats and dogs, and while this is commonly associated with older animals, it has been found in much younger animals with a genetic predisposition to it. A veterinary surgeon can do a lot of good with simple procedures such as fusing joints together or cutting out problematic bits of bone and cartilage that are just too painful to use and replacing them with synthetic options. Arthritis can be just as painful for animals as it is for humans, so if you notice your cat or dog really losing mobility due to this condition, you should consider surgical options.

Dislocations

While a dislocated bone might seem like it is easy to fix without using surgery, that generally only applies to humans, and even then is not always true. The difference is that humans understand what has to be done and can react calmly to any procedure, whereas a cat or dog is more likely to thrash around and cause more harm than good. Bad dislocations of important joints, such as the hips, can be very hard to reset without surgery. If your surgeon recommends you letting them put your pet under to fix the dislocation, you should heed their advice, as it is a very safe procedure with a much better success rate than non-surgical treatments of hip dislocation.

Inflamed Joints

Sometimes cats and dogs don't have any medical condition at all, but they will develop an inflammation in their joints that causes them great discomfort when walking. Surgical options can help reduce this pain, as well as fully understand what the issue is. From incorrectly growing bones to a lack of cartilage and anything in between, sometimes a veterinary surgeon just needs to get a closer look to fully diagnose your beloved pets. While scary, pet surgery has come a long way and will almost always only be recommended if it is very safe.
