Sensitive Skin in Dogs: How to Help Your Pooch Find Relief

Blog

Dog owners quickly learn to spot the difference between the different types of itches that their furry pets can experience. A mild, temporary irritant causing an itch is quickly banished with a quick scratching, and that's the end of that. However, sometimes a dog can seem to be plagued by itches, furiously scratching for extended periods and often seeming to be distressed by the fact that they're unable to find relief. When your dog has sensitive skin, it's up to you to get them some much-needed relief.

A Medical Condition

When your dog's irritation is severe and recurring, it's important to get to the root of the problem and find out if the issue is due to an actual medical condition. Consult your vet to find out if your dog has any likely allergies. Allergies can be triggered by a wide number of sources. Your dog might have a mild allergy to something in their diet, or it could even be something in your home or garden. They could even be allergic to the shampoo you use on them. Tracing the source of the irritant allows for more effective management of your dog's discomfort, though they will still often need some extra assistance.

Combatting Sensitive Skin

Regular dog grooming is a very good idea for dogs affected by sensitive skin. While working on your dog, the groomer will be able to inspect the condition of your dog's skin, looking for red and inflamed patches. This can warrant a trip to the vet, particularly when your dog's scratching has ruptured their skin, leaving them more vulnerable to infections. The topical nature of the grooming will go a long way towards alleviating your dog's discomfort.

Maximum Moisturisation

The groomer will use a dog-specific moisturising shampoo to offset the dryness of your dog's skin if this is the cause of the itching. This will be a hypoallergenic product designed for sensitive skin, used in conjunction with a bathing brush, which will gently exfoliate your dog's skin, removing dead cells and other potential sources of irritation. This will generally be followed by a conditioning treatment for maximum moisturisation, and again, this will be hypoallergenic.

While some skin irritations in dogs are a sign of allergies, other dogs simply have sensitive skin that requires specialist care. Professional dog grooming is an easy way to achieve this level of care while making sure your beloved pooch stays comfortable and doesn't feel the need to continually scratch themselves.
